Volumetric thermometry

چکیده

Background/introduction Many applications of thermal therapy would benefit from temperature distribution measurements with high spatial and temporal resolution that cover a large 3D volume. Although MRI can acquire 3D temperature measurements, it is not possible to obtain fully sampled 3D MRI measurements that cover the insonified field of view with sufficient spatial and temporal resolution for most thermal therapy procedures. With multiple receiver coils, acquisition speed can be improved with undersampling and parallel image reconstruction methods. Constrained or model-based image reconstruction methods can allow increased undersampling. Depending on the anatomic region of interest, the effects of motion, chemical shift, and susceptibility need to be addressed. Non-Cartesian methods can reduce sensitivity to motion, but are less forgiving to off resonance effects. Applications to the brain and the breast are considered.

Robust binary feedback control of MR guided volumetric HIFU ablation

Volumetric High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) ablation has several advantages as compared to the traditional point-by-point ablation, such as improved energy efficiency and homogeneous thermal lesions with sharp borders [1]. However, there is an increased risk of excessive off-focus heating, especially in the near-field [2], and the thermal lesions can also vary in shape and size due to l...

Therapeutic MRI-guided High Intensity Focused Ultrasound Ablation of Uterine Fibroids with Volumetric Heating Technique: Early Clinical Experience in South Korea

Introduction: A recent development in the treatment of uterine fibroids is the use of magnetic resonance guided high intensity focused ultrasound (MR-HIFU), which has been tested in several clinical trials and has been approved for clinical use in several countries In a traditional MR-HIFU treatment, a single focal point is iteratively sonicated at a time until the desired volume is ablated, wi...

Spiral-based 3D MR thermometry

Background/introduction Real time MR thermometry, usually based on the protonresonance frequency shift, is a key aspect of MR-guided focused ultrasound procedures. The desire to monitor the entire sonicated volume has led the field towards the development of rapid, 3D methods; however, acquiring fully sampled 3D volumetric data to monitor heating is time consuming, and so fast methods must be d...

Volumetric HIFU ablation under 3D guidance of rapid MRI thermometry.

A volumetric sonication method is proposed that produces volume ablations by steering the focal point along a predetermined trajectory consisting of multiple concentric outward-moving circles. This method was tested in vivo on pig thigh muscle (32 ablations in nine animals). Trajectory diameters were 4, 12, and 16 mm with sonication duration depending on the trajectory size and ranging from 20 ...

Optimization of volumetric MR-guided high-intensity focused ulatrsound ablations in moving organs

Introduction In this work, a method for the optimization of volumetric MR-guided high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablations is presented. While commonly MRguidance of thermal therapies is based on temperature control the on-line assessment of the thermal dose has been suggested to determine the therapy endpoint [1]. Therefore, we propose to monitor the thermal dose [2] of the treated ti...
